Hometown of the Shinsengumi
Considered as the Shinsengumi’s hometown, Tokyo’s Hino City is Hijikata Toshizō and Inoue Genzaburo’s birthplace, respectively the vice-commander and captain of sixth unit. And Kondō Isami and Okita Sōji, another of the guard troop’s prominent figure, were also stationed there to master their early day’s swordsmanship . Hino City has therefore an affectionate bonding with the Shinsengumi and a number of reputable historical sites worth visiting.
Hino City is easily accessible from Tokyo Station by a forty-five-minute train ride on the Chuo Line. Several museums and places of attraction, either operated by the government or individuals housing invaluable literature, letters and artefacts. Opening hours vary. Some are open only once every two weeks and a good itinerary planning becomes indispensable.
Known as the Hometown of the Shinsengumi, an array of various displays featuring motifs related to the Shinsengumi can be found in the Hino City. Several museums and attractions are dedicated to preserving valuable documents, letters, historical materials and artefacts related to the Shinsengumi. The Shinsengumi Furusato History Museum is managed by the Hino City government. The Satō Hikogorō Museum, Inoue Genzaburo Museum, Hijikata Toshizō Museum are privately managed. They have varying opening hours, with only two days of opening per month. Thus it is necessary to plan your visit in advance and be aware that opening hours may be adjusted during times of epidemic.
