Nyoraidō Temple
After the Battle of Bonari Pass, Hijikata Toshizō and Ōtori Keisuke left to seek reinforcements from neighboring han. Meanwhile, Saitō Hajime led a small group of Shinsengumi who remained in Aizu, safeguarding at Nyoraidō Temple.
On 5 September 1868, over three hundred government troops attacked. The Shinsengumi fought back despite a vast disparity in armed forces and the absence of allied support. Miraculously, Saitō Hajime and six others survived and escaped with support from the Suzaku Unit in the vicinity.
Given the severe limitations in news circulation at the time, documents including Nakajima Nobori Oboegaki recorded that the Shinsengumi were completely annihilated in this battle. Today, a memorial monument stands at Nyoraidō Temple, marking the site as the place where the Shinsengumi met their tragic end.
